So we're left with the slate of rumored Republican picks, among them Florida Governor Charlie Crist, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal. They all have plusses and minuses, but one stands out: Bobby Jindal. Here's why:
Bobby Jindal, both symbolically and in actual practice, represents everything that needs to change with the Republican Party. At 37, he's the youngest governor in America. But, unlike other youthful candidates (see: Barry Obama), Bobby Jindal has a real record of leadership, reform, and accomplishment. But, if there's one thing we've learned from BarryO, it's that "change" cannot be good in and of itself. We have to ask the question, what are we changing and how are we changing it? When looking at Jindal's record, it's clear he has the right priorities. Most importantly, they're not only the right priorities to change our federal government, but the right priorities to put the GOP back on track. So Jindal's a twofer--save our nation and, in the process, our Party.
As Governor, Jindal has tackled corruption and lax ethics in a state known for nasty, dirty governance. He turned a state health department that was $400 million in debt into one with a $220 million surplus. He's 100% pro-life. He's a fiscal conservative. While on the House Committee on Homeland Security, he showed he's on the right side of the Global War on Terror: victory.
But more than all this, he has going for him the simple fact that he is one of the rare conservatives that appeals to moderates, independents and enlightened Democrats. Few Republicans, especially in a year like this, can say that (luckily, McCain is also one of the few).
Perhaps the only criticism of a Jindal VP pick would be that he's not experienced enough. Well, that argument creates a perfect opportunity to illustrate that Jindal, while young and relatively inexperienced, is far more experienced than Barry Obama. I'm curious as to what other doubts linger with Jindal--please post them in the comments.
And this is only my personal opinion. I'm sure Russ supports his guy, Mitt. And all of us will work our hearts out for whoever McCain puts his trust in. This Republican hopes it's Bobby Jindal!

Tim Pawlenty is the Governor of Minnesota as well as Minneapolis.
I worked on Bobby's gubenatorial campaign back in 2004 (while I was a student at Tulane) and knew then what I know now, Bobby Jindal has a very bright future. He lost that bid to Blanco, which was pretty devastating, but he was determined win the second time around and that is exactly what he did. I would love for him to run along with McCain and I think he is the best choice. He would ensure that a minority still would be on either ticket. But black, thats so 1960's, Indian is the new black baby!!
Just a correction ... it is MINNESOTA Governor Tim Pawlenty, not Minneapolis.
I corrected that. I'm just looking forward to the convention too much!! :)
Schwitters, you are on point. Governor Jindal is by far the best prospective Vice Presidential pick for the Republican ticket. To cut to the heart of the matter, this is a contest in which youth and ethnicity play key roles. Just the visual alone of the grizzled Navy veteran standing on stage next to a young and gifted orator is powerful factor in Senator Obama's favor; a factor that could influence this campaign, in which 'change' has become a mantra, as much as or more than issues and experience. Governor Jindal provides that stylistic, youthful appeal that Senator McCain lacks. Such a ticket would send a powerful message that the Republican party is still alive and well, and that Senator Obama will need to develop a more sophisticated general election strategy than muttering George Bush in the same breath as John McCain.
Your ol' intern pal, Blake.
You know, Aaron, while I would be thrilled to vote for Mitt Romney, I think for practical purposes Governor Sarah Palin sports many of the same qualities you credit to Jindal (who I would be very pleased with, btw). But Palin does something Jindal cannot, which is to satisfy an entire army of women who are pissed off their chance at making history has been ruined. If not Pres, why not VP. I'm leaning Palin, who I believe also represents the future of the GOP, along with fresh faces like Bobby Jindal, who I say again, I would be very pleased to see nominated.
Wow, I'm 18 years old and a strong Alabamian conservative. This is of course the first year I am able to vote in a presidential election and it has been insane. I'll admit my first choice at the Republican nominee was not McCain, but rather Fred Thompson (he was a true candidate). However, I come from a family of 7 and my oldest sister currently resides in New Orleans. She too is a strong conservative and an amazing person. After hearing her talk about how great Bobby Jindal has been for Louisiana
I know he would make an amazing President ( wait I mean Vice President - sry McCain ). Yes, he will make an amazing Vice President
and honestly we need to set up our 2012 candidate (Jindal 2012 anyone?). Jindal is the start of the new and thriving Republican Party !!!
