McCain weighs in on Gay Adoption

John McCain, who has an adopted daughter, stated in an interview released in the New York Times that he 'encouraged adoption' and believed that the adoptive parents should be 'traditional, mixed sex' couples.

Naturally, gay rights activists began hammering the McCain campaign on the issue. Tuesday the campaign clarified stating that McCain believed that the issue of same sex couples adopting should be a matter left to that states. Additionally he did not believe that there needed to be a national ban on the issue.

Was this a flip-flop? Eh---not so much. I think it's a perfectly rational approach to the issue. He's stated his personal opinion and clarified that he will not let his personal opinion trump his political opinion. Respectable.

I was adopted when I was two days old and brought to the US from a certain foreign country (we'll just say it's south of Texas). Adoption is a difficult, time consuming, and costly process. There are so many displaced children out there who are in need of a loving home and family. John and Cindy McCain obviously know this as well.

I commend Senator McCain for his willingness to see past his own opinion and look towards a better quality of life for un-adopted children.
